SIMPLY put, in terms of collective existence, when the Northern Ireland state was formed, NI Protestants secured political power, but had no moral power across the rest of the island. NI Catholics had no political power, but had moral power within themselves and across the island. Free State Catholics got both political power and moral power out of the settlement a century ago. The Ulster Protestant minority in the South had neither political power nor moral power. If all of this could be described as a gangster movie, I would be demanding, “Where’s my cut of the moral action.” This division of political and moral power is now coming home to roost for NI unionists. They need to start thinking about how they get their cut of the moral action on the island too. Bespoke narratives of Human Rights need to be fashioned. Could we begin by suggesting that a group or groups exist in the context of Human Rights?

Where’s my cut of the moral action you shower of gangsters?
